Reap the benefits of solar photo-voltaic micro-generation.
If you are thinking about but have not so far installed a Solar PV system, the following information will be of interest.
Under the Feed-In Tariff (FIT) Scheme, as applicable to newly installed Solar Voltaic Systems (PV), you should be eligible for the full FIT payments if it is installed using a Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) certificated product and installer.
(* The Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) certificates installers and microgeneration products under 50kW.)
3 ways to benefit from PV and the FIT.
1. Generation tariff – you will be paid a tariff - at a rate set by your energy supplier - for each unit of electricity you generate, for a period of 25 years, in the case of PV.
2. Export tariff - you will receive a further 3p/kWh from your energy supplier for each unit you export back to the electricity grid.
3. Energy bill savings - you'll use less electricity taken from the grid.
An example of how the FIT works with a typical 2kWp PV system, assuming 50% of the electricity generated is exported. You could earn:
£700 per year from the Generation Tariff, £30 per year from the Export Tariff, save £110 per year in current electricity bills. This gives a total saving of around £840 per year, which should easily offset the cost of the 25 year loan taken out.

Globehuggers. Nice people to deal with.

to be informed about new domestic energy efficiency grants,
energy efficiency freebies and recent innovations
as and when they become available.
- Loft
insulation and cavity wall insulation, energy
retaining glazing, Heat-Harvester™,
Sunpipes, modern
gas central heating systems, solar
water heating systems, wind turbines (coming soon) ~ all these can help
to reduce the amount of energy used in heating and lighting and reduce bills
enormously.
- Low energy lamps last up to ten times longer than ordinary bulbs and use
far less electricity - so you can do your bit towards saving the planet from
climate change too.
- Remember to turn off lights when you leave a room for long periods.
- Use an eco-kettle to boil water
for cooking - they're more efficient at getting up to temperature. Avoid over-filling
the kettle but be sure to cover the element.
- Where you need to use saucepans - use the lid and turn down the heat!! Less
energy is lost that way. Highly efficient hobs are now available more news
about that later.
- Use a toaster rather than the grill to make toast.
- Make sure your hot water tank and hot water pipes are fully lagged, this
can pay for itself in a few months and go on saving you money for years to
come.
- Put draught strips around windows and exterior doors. If possible fit a
flap across the letter-box.
- Where possible wait until you have a full load before using your washing
machine.
- If you use a dishwasher select the low-temperature programme unless you
have very soiled dishes.
- If you have a dripping tap ensure it is repaired quickly. In just one day,
you could waste enough hot water to fill a bath.
- Switch off your TV, video and Hi-Fi at the set. Standby can use as much
as 10%-60% of the power that would be used by the device if it was switched
on.
- Defrost fridges and freezers regularly to keep them running efficiently.
- Shower if possible, rather than take a bath, this saves money and water.
- At night, pull all curtains to stop heat loss through the windows. Take
care not to drape curtains over radiators as this will funnel heat straight
out of the windows.
- Don't set your water thermostat too high; 60°C/140°F is usually
adequate for bathing and washing.
- Reducing your room temperature by just 1°C can cut as much as 10% off
your heating bills.
- Turn off the tap whilst brushing your teeth. If everyone in the country
did so, it would save millions of litres of wasted water every DAY!! Producing
and transporting water is expensive and uses energy.
